How to Succeed in the Job Market as a College Student

Whether you're a recent graduate looking for your first big career move or a student looking for something part-time, finding your footing in the job market can be difficult. Trust us, we've seen it all. Those entry level positions requiring five years of experience, minimum-wage jobs with a master’s degree requirement, and the ever-popular "Must meet all job requirements!" (In all caps, of course, for extra emphasis.)

But don't lose hope; there are plenty of companies out there that truly appreciate and seek out students for their roles. The trick is grabbing their attention and ensuring they think you're the right fit (and vice versa!) So, here is our advice to you on succeeding in today's job market:

Trust Your Gut

You’ll most likely be interviewing with multiple businesses, all with different cultures and ways of functioning. If you get a bad feeling from an interview or interviewer, trust your gut! Your main goal may be to secure a position, but it’s important to remember this is a two-way street. As much as they’re interviewing you, you’re ensuring they’re a good fit for you too.

Be sure to ask questions that will give you an idea of how the company runs and manages itself. Some of our favorites include:

  •  "What’s your favorite part about working for XYZ company?”
  •  “How will my job performance be measured and evaluated?”
  •  “What types of advancement or learning opportunities are there?”

Questions like these give you a look at how the employer works in terms of its culture, processes, and opportunities for advancement.

If you’re second guessing your part in a particular company, then odds are it won’t make a good fit. Keep pushing on and waiting for the right opportunity; it’s out there!

Stay Confident

Even if you're a recent graduate or a student looking for work, there's no reason to doubt your abilities as a potential employee. Even though it's completely normal to feel anxious during an interview, try to keep in mind the reason you're there: you have the abilities, knowledge, and potential to succeed in the position.

Remind yourself of your accomplishments and strengths, and let that confidence shine through during the interview. Remember, the company is looking for someone like you who can bring value to their organization. So, stay confident and trust in your abilities as you navigate the interview process.

Preparation is also key in feeling confident during your interview. is a great Glassdoor resource where users can submit interview questions they were asked during their hiring process; use this to your advantage to prepare and research any answers prior to your interview. It's also a good idea to do some preliminary research on the company in case questions like "What do you know about us?" come up, which they often do.

Be Yourself

While it might sound cliche, it's always an important reminder! If you are just starting out in your career, finding a job in which you have experience can be difficult Be upfront with your interviewer about the skills and experience you currently possess.

If there is a certain skill they’re after that you’re less than qualified for, explain that you haven’t had much experience in the field but are willing to learn. You may be surprised at how many companies will train you on the job if you have the right soft skills!
